Cut paper, silk petals, loss
8.5” x 6.5”

Each petal, a memory never made. A girl who never got the chance to dance and dream of the life she wanted. As an offering, this vinok was made for me to wear for her. A lost sister who lives in the hearts of those who live on. Through these actions, kindness and love shall be spread from myself to each of those whom I touch. From the vinok through the body and into the next body, we create a link of souls that form a netting. An embrace webbed together by the souls of the people.

My name is Portia Scabar, I am currently a third-year glass major at the Alberta University of the Arts. As a member of the Hear/d Residency and both a person and artist during the global pan- demic, a portion of my artistic practice has shifted away from glass blowing, which pushed me to work in a more interdisciplinary way. As an advocate as well as someone who struggles with mental health, concepts like growth and change are present within my work. However, at times I will allude to themes with a dark sense of humor as a commentary on human coping mecha- nisms and the comforting nature of humor.
